I think this was somewhat inevitable. PixelJunk Shooter 2 is, no doubt in my mind, the greatest twin-stick shooter of all time. That isn’t a very light title either, considering the absolute wealth of the genre. Bullet hell shooters, schmups and twin-sticks pride the 2D shooter genre into oblivion but none have done it like Shooter 2 have done. The game before it, its predecessor, looks like nothing compared to the sequel. The changing environment, dynamic suits, little environmental foreshadowing and mechanics play make for a truly refreshing experience.
Shooter 2 was my game of the year, until this year turned out to be infinitely more sweeter. It still stands as the greatest twin-stick shooter I’ve ever played and is home to one of the best soundtracks of the year, though obviously not enough to make the cut unfortunately.
Truly, a stand-out game that deserves your dollars or pounds or Euros (if there’s any left by the time you finish reading this). But, yeah, the downloadable category is usually used to the smallest of experiences but after fifteen hours in this thing, fair to say that downloadable games aren’t just little chunks of experiences. They can make for cohesive, stretching experiences that challenge the genre gods at their own game.
